For yet another year, Orchard Farm has been able to say that they have a speech and debate team. Miss. Keeler, the speech and debate team coach, is looking for more students to join the team.
There is more to speech and debate team then just winning awards, medals, and comptetitions; there are other benefits too. Lauren Beasley, a two year member of the team tells about how being on the team benefits her in a different way. Beasley shares, “It helps with public speaking and my confidence.” Beasley also explained how being a member enhances her knowledge of world issues she would otherwise be clueless about.
Annie Chen, a new member of the speech and debate team says it also helps with speaking out loud.
In order to recruit new members; the current members, Katie Kerkemeyer (senior), Lauren Beasley (junior), and Annie Chen (junior) are organizing a “mock debate.” The topics will be climate change and terrorism. It is solely a demonstration to show what debates traditionally look like. This event has not been yet scheduled.
“Debating and speech are really good to put on college applications and scholarship programs,” Keeler said. Keeler also said in joining this club, students are not required everyday before or after school, only once a week when there are no interferences.
Some debate teams require partners to participate too. “We need more people,” Beasley said, because the whole team consists of upper clansmen.
“It’s awesome,” said Beasley in agreement with Chen. “Knowing you have the ability to come up with ideas on your own.”
